In Vivo Evaluation

Background

In vivo evaluation is the testing of devices using animal models. Before devices can be tested on humans, animals with similar physiology to humans are used for testing.

Model Selection

The selection of animals for in vivo testing is of high importance. Common animals used for in vivo testing are bovine, porcine and ovine models [1].

Calves and sheep are often used for long term testing of devices [2]. They have a similar  body size and volume flow rate of blood to human making them ideal for in vivo testing [2]. Duration of long terms studies often varies from approximately three months to a year [2].
