Background

In the field of mechanical circulatory support, there are three types of preclinical evaluation:

• In Silico Evaluation
• In Vitro Evaluation
• In Vivo Evaluation

In silico testing is the computer modelling of a system allowing a rapid, risk free and non-invasive development of a product.

In vitro evaluation is achieved using environments similar to those of a human. For example, mock circulation loops can be used to represent the human circulatory system.

In vivo is the final stage of preclinical evaluation where animals are used to test prototypes.
