First-Generation VADs


Background

First-generation ventricular assist devices (VADs) are volume/positive displacement pumps, which function on a fill and eject cycle, delivering pulsatile flow. These device consist of a blood chamber, which is periodically pressurized pneumatically or electrically and can be implanted either intra-, para- or extra-corporeally. Whilst, first-generation VADs could support a patient, they were limited by durability, size and patient survival rates in contrast to second- and third-generation VADs, which are based on rotary type.
