Background

ECLS (ExtraCorporeal Life Support) or ECMO (ExtraCorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) is a temporary haemodynamic and/or respiratory support. Those terms are used rather indifferently, however, technically an ECLS may or may not comprise an oxygenator.

Main considerations

When considering ECMO as a rescue therapy, several questions should be asked.

What kind of support does my patient need?

Which accesses are available?

If the patient only needs a respiratory support and is haemodynamically stable, VV-ECMO is the configuration needed.

If the patient only needs a cardiac support and is respiratory stable, VA-ECMO is the configuration needed.
